Out-dated security and identification systems and access kiosks are a threat to the nation’s security. Also, verifying identities manually consumes a lot of time and are a pain from the customer’s point of view. With the current advancement in technology, the ideas that previously seemed far-fetched are now becoming more and more commonplace. Adding simple yet efficient biometric security layers to the prevalent technology can help to detect and eliminate fraud and significantly improve security.
Recently, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad successfully implemented check-ins through Aadhar cards for all its domestic passengers. Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) selected Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad to implement this end-to-end E-boarding process based on biometric screening built by GMR Hyderabad Airport Limited (GHIAL). Ashok Gajapathi Raju, the Union Minister for civil aviation inaugurated this E-boarding facility. This unique move guarantees a better consumer experience and further improves the security. Since the airport’s environment is ever-changing and dynamic, digitizing and automating the processes renders the experience hassle-free and enhances security.
Hyderabad Airport has marked the trail on which others need to tread. Mumbai and Bangalore airport have already taken the lead from Hyderabad airport and would soon enable biometric screening at the check-ins for people with digital identity numbers mentioned in their Aadhar cards.
Currently, only of the many entry gates is equipped with the biometric screening. The authorities at the Hyderabad airport plan to expand biometric technology to all the gates. All the important passenger processes from check-in to the boarding of the flight are covered under the new and improved process of E-boarding. Such implementation ensures that only a person carrying his aadhar number and mobile phone, which further carries the E-boarding pass, will gain entry to the airport. The E-boarding kiosks do not allow the passengers inside the terminal before the scheduled time, reducing the congestion inside the airport premises.
However, the E-boarding process is currently limited to people with aadhar cards. The conventionally used methods would continue to work and customers can enter the airport showing a photo ID.
